Enter if You Dare: Ten Haunted Houses to Visit This Halloween Season

It’s the time of year when spooky attractions are popping up all over the country.  Not everyone is a fan of haunted houses, but those that are know that some haunted houses are better than others and that a great haunted house is hard to beat.  You might already have a favorite haunted house that you go to every year, but it’s always fun to try something new as well.  We wanted to see what’s out there this year to scare our pants off, and we were not disappointed with the options!  Here are some haunted houses around the country we think are worth checking out.

Dark Woods – Natchitoches, LA


Running Fridays and Saturdays September 22nd through October 28th, and then open on Halloween, this year’s offerings at Dark Woods includes a refurbished version of their original outdoor haunt featuring a longer trail and Hollywood- style special effects.  They also have Dark Carnival in 3D, Louisiana’s only ChromaDepth blacklight attraction and a theatrical blacklight thriller.

Nashville Nightmare – Nashville, TN

Running weekends and other select dates September 15th through November 11th, Nashville Nightmare is now in its seventh year of bringing terror to guests.  On numerous “best of” haunted house lists, Nashville Nightmare is offering four different attractions this year: Industrial Undead, Phantoms, Reformatory, and Fairy Tale Hell.

The Shallow Grave – Winter Haven, FL


Running weekends and select nights September 29th through November 4th The Shallow Grave has two large haunted houses spanning nearly 13,000 square feet.  Returning from last year is Pavor Nocturnus which is a twisted spin on some phobias, and a ride into the deepest darkest parts of the subconscious but with new characters, scares, and themes.  New for 2017 is Betrayal where you have to navigate your way through hordes of the undead on the rundown property of Thaddeus Van Buren as you find yourself in the middle of an uprising.

Pennhurst Asylum – Spring City, PA

Running weekends and select nights September 22nd through November 4th Pennhurst Asylum is located at a real former state hospital dating back to the early 1900s.  Featuring four haunted attractions throughout the campus the combination of historical artifacts and special effects is sure to get your heart racing.

Ghost Ship Harbor – Quincy, MA

Running weekends and select nights September 29th through Halloween, Ghost Ship Harbor is an immersive haunted attraction that started last year.  The attractions take place on the deck of a 718 foot battleship, the USS Salem that’s docked in Quincy, MA.  The four attractions cover everything from phobias to the paranormal some there’s something that’s sure to spook everyone.

The Dent Schoolhouse – Cincinnati, OH

Running weekends and select dates September 15th through November 5th the Dent Schoolhouse has been dubbed Cincinnati’s scariest haunted house.  Taking place in a school built in 1894, they offer lights out events, lights on events, and ghost tours so everyone has a chance to enjoy it.  Purchase a “touch pass” if you don’t mind the monsters physically interacting with you for added frights.

Indy Scream Park – Anderson, IN

Running October 15th through November 4th, Indy Scream Park offers six different attractions, two of them new for 2017.  Zombieland: Unchained and Pandemic: Mutation are both interactive attractions where guests can choose to watch the action or interact with the creatures within.  Those who opt for a truly interactive experience may be grabbed, held back, sent into hidden rooms, removed from their group or even forced to remain.

Terror Behind the Walls – Philadelphia, PA


Running weekends and select dates September 22nd through November 11th, Terror Behind the Walls is celebrating 25 years of horror.  The attraction takes over the Eastern State Penitentiary, a real prison that was used from 1829 until 1971, during the Halloween season.  Six events take place in different areas of the prison, and considering the building has been featured on ghost hunting shows, you may encounter some unplanned scares as well.

Hangman’s House of Horrors – Forth Worth, TX


Running weekends and select dates September 22nd through November 4th, Hangman’s House of Horrors is the largest charity benefiting haunted house in the world.  The theme of the house changes every year, with this year’s theme being Texas Legends.  The haunted tour includes three separate attractions: the classic Hangman’s House of Horrors, No Place Like Home 3D and Zombie Outbreak!

Netherworld Haunted House – Norcross, GA

Running September 22nd through November 5th, Netherworld Haunted House is created by film and television professionals which has made it notable for its custom movie quality special effects, amazing actors, unique themes, and extremely detailed sets.  The final season in its Norcross location, this year’s attractions include Mr. Grendel’s Fun House of Horror, Primal Scream.  For those interested in year-round horror, Netherworld now also has Escape Netherworld, an escape room based on the Halloween attraction.

Even if you’re not a fan of being scared, if you enjoy art and design you can at least appreciate the work and artistry that go into setting up these elaborate events.  And if you do enjoy being scared, then you’re going to have a great time!  So take a break from your own house design and go visit some haunted houses.
