It’s a new year and everyone is making resolutions to improve themselves with the fresh start that January 1st brings. But have you made any resolutions for your home? Now is a great time to set some interior design goals for your space to tackle throughout the year. Been wanting to redo your living room for years? This can be your year! Bedroom been needing a fresh coat of paint? Finally get it done! If no home resolutions immediately come to mind, here are some good ones to get you started.
Clear Out the Clutter
Even if your home was fairly clutter free a couple of months ago, chances are that after the holidays there’s a good amount of stuff that could be cleared out. Cleaning and organizing your home is one of the best (and cheapest) ways to freshen up your space and feel better about it. After an initial clean through, make sure part of your resolution is to go through room-by-room throughout the year to rid yourself of any clutter that may be creeping back in. If you’re the type of person that can’t pass up a good deal, resolve to follow the “one in, two out” rule when purchasing new things to help keep your space from becoming overcrowded.
Learn Your Style and Trust Your Gut
Have you been following trends without ever really deciding what you actually like? Make this year the time when you learn what style really speaks to you and work towards making your space reflect that. Once you’ve owned your style preference, learn to trust your gut when making interior design decisions. If it’s something you really love, don’t let others talk you out of it. It’s your space that you have to live in – it should make you happy. If you’re unsure about something it’s fine to take in outside input, but when it comes down to it, you need to just know your style, trust your gut, and do what makes you happy.
Take A Risk with Color
2018 is going to be the year of bold color, at least if Pantone and various paint companies have anything to say about it. So what better year to finally take that chance on bold bright colors than this one? Whether repainting the walls, getting new furniture (or reupholstering old), or just changing out seasonal accessories, embrace bold colors for brilliant results. It’s easy to find less expensive and temporary ways to add color to your space, take the risk!
Look for New Inspirations
Everyone heads to Pinterest, Instagram, and other architecture and design sources for interior inspirations. But this year try to find some new sources of inspiration. If you know you’ll be traveling a lot this year, put together a notebook that can serve as a portable mood board to gather inspirations from all the places you go. If you’re more homebound this year, look to some of your favorite restaurants for dining room inspiration. You can also be inspired by your favorite movies and television shows.
This resolution is not just good for your home, but good for the planet. While it may be difficult to do all at once (and may even go against the spirit of the resolution), resolve to bring sustainable pieces into your home. As your larger pieces of furniture need to be replaced, opt for new pieces that are made by companies that use eco-friendly sustainable practices, and sustainable materials. Eventually your home will be full of sustainable products and the Earth will thank you.
Any of these home resolutions strike a chord with you? Which one do you think you’ll be undertaking this year? Let us know what your resolutions are in the comments!
